Jonas Salk was a medical researcher who had done years of research on polio, and with the help from the March of Dimes foundation for funding his polio research, he was able to develop the first successful polio vaccine. On April 12, 1955, Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was announced “safe and effective” over live radio. After this, Jonas Salk became a national hero by breaking the medical barrier with an effective vaccine for polio. Salk’s landmark work in virus research continues to impact the world of medicine today.
